Terms of Service

Last updated 19 October 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Amos Cao (“we”, “us”), an individual and Ippo’s sole developer, for your use of Ippo, on iPhone and at helloippo.app. By creating an account or using Ippo you agree to them. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.

Your account

  • You must be at least 13 years old to use Ippo. If you are under 18 (or the age of majority where you live, if higher), you need a parent or guardian’s permission.
  • Accounts are by invitation for now. An account is for one person; keep your password to yourself and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
  • You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete account.

The service

Ippo is currently free. It is under active development, so features will change, and we may pause or end the service. If we end it, we will give you reasonable notice where we can.

AI-generated content

Many example sentences and translations in Ippo are written by AI models. We filter and check them, but they can still be unnatural or wrong. Treat them as study material, not as an authority. If you find a bad one, report it from the card.

Your content

Cards you create and notes you send stay yours. You give us permission to store, copy and process them only as needed to run Ippo for you, for example to sync them between your devices. Don’t add content you don’t have the right to use.

Acceptable use

Don’t misuse Ippo. In particular, don’t:

  • try to access other people’s accounts or data, or our systems beyond the app’s normal use;
  • disrupt or overload the service, or get around its limits;
  • scrape or bulk-download content, or use it to build a competing product;
  • use Ippo for anything unlawful.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.

Our content and open data

The Ippo app, its design and its generated content belong to us. Some of the word lists and dictionary data in Ippo come from open sources, such as JMdict and KANJIDIC2 from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, and are used under their licenses (including CC BY-SA 4.0). Those licenses, not these terms, govern that data. Genki is a trademark of The Japan Times; Ippo is not affiliated with or endorsed by it.

Disclaimers

Ippo is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We don’t promise that it will always be available, error-free, or that it will help you reach any particular level in a language.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for lost data or progress, arising from your use of Ippo. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for Ippo in the twelve months before the claim, which today is nothing. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or rights you have as a consumer.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Connecticut, USA, except where the law of the country you live in requires otherwise.

Changes

We may update these terms. If we do, we will update the date above, and for significant changes tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. If you keep using Ippo after a change, the new terms apply.
